tom cruise mission impossible ghost protocol movieMission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol made nearly $700 million worldwide when it was released last December, and a fifth film was soon put into development at Paramount. Director Brad Bird hinted that he wouldn’t be returning earlier this year, but Tom Cruise hasn’t had to look far to find a new director.

According to Deadline Christopher McQuarrie is “poised” to take on the next film and is wanted by both Cruise and producer J.J. Abrams. McQuarrie is the writer of The Usual Suspects and recently directed Cruise in Jack Reacher. That film is also at Paramount and the studio is said to be happy with it, so you can see why McQuarrie would be a top choice to go on the next mission with Cruise.

Nothing is known about Mission Impossible 5 at the moment. Obviously Tom Cruise will be back, and we can assume that some of the supporting players (Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton and Simon Pegg) may be involved again.
